Rick Santorum Opens Up About ‘Devastating’ Death of His Son Gabriel

Former Republican Pennsylvania senator and political commentator Rick Santorum opened up to Tucker Carlson about the death of his son and how it affected him and his wife Karen Friday on Fox Nation’s “Tucker Carlson Today.” Gabriel was the couple’s eighth child and he survived for only two hours.

Santorum said the event was “devastating” and was the most challenging moment in his life.

“We are sitting there going over this one spot on the sonogram, he drops the wand and says ‘I have to get the doctor,” Santorum said.

“The doctor comes in and he looks at me, and this is as cold as I can ever remember, he says, ‘your son has a fatal defect and he’s going to die.’”

Santorum noted that this conversation with the doctor took place at a time when he was growing in his Christian faith, and noted that he remembers having a “conversation with God,” questioning why He would take the couple’s son.

“It was devastating,” Santorum said.

The former senator also described the evolution of a diary his wife kept each time she got pregnant as a way to share the experience with her kids as they got older.

“She was a neonatal intensive care nurse, so pregnancies were a really joyful time and she would keep notes,” he said.

“She was keeping notes about our son so she kept writing these letters to him. Hoping someday he would read them. She wrote these letters, at the end, she kept writing because it was her way to get this stuff out.”

Santorum said that his wife shared the letters with her mother, who had gone through a similar experience losing a child to SIDS.

“She said we have to publish this,” Santorum said. “We have to publish these letters. Anyway, we found a Catholic publisher to publish it, it sold out. It’s still around, it’s called ‘Letters to Gabriel.’”

So painfully precious and healing to others…weep with those who weep, joy comes in the morning!
God cares, and comforts in all our losses if we cast our cares on Him and hold Him tight. 1 Peter 5:7 – 11…knowing that our little ones are safe in the arms of Jesus to be re-united whole/healthy in glorified bodies together one day!
I endured thru a pregnancy facing possible loss month by month but God used 2 faithful Christian MD/ND together to get my baby to term alive and healthy. It is always a journey of faith and hanging onto God’s promises, comfort and care that grows us strong for every future challenge. Philippians 4 has blessed/strengthened me for 56yrs.
    Shalom! [Numbers 6:24 – 26] … Psalm 91.

It is oftentimes hard for men to comprehend God’s purpose. As you read in Isaiah you read where God’s thoughts are higher than man’s. We don’t always understand his reasons for allowing a loved pass on but usually sometime down the road we do. Faith is sometimes one of the hardest things to have when it comes to a God one cannot see. But, for me, God has always given back many times, signs, that He exists and that He loves me. Hang in there, Rick. You will be glad you did.

Sorry for his loss. You’re not supposed to die before your kids as I once heard. However, what is it with these politicians and so-called celebrities that we have to know of their troubles? Reticence and grieving in private seems to be a lost art with these folks.

    • Ruckweiler says:

Mistake here. Your kids are not supposed to die before you.

There are only two things guaranteed in this world that’s death and God. We sit and lament when someone in our family dies. Dying is a process of life. If we live to die than our lives are in vain. We must live with God in our center. Our children are an extension of our temporary self in our physical existence. We are not crying for the loved one who left their body. We are sinners and egocentric and whining about that we lost as extension of what we claim to be ours. Your son who died belongs to God. If you believe in God and you lament over someone who died, , “What do you mean he is gone my dear woman. There he is the body.” She replied, ‘ No he is not these he is gone you are fools number one because the wise lament for the living nor the dead. Some speak of the soul as a mazing and describe it as amazing, but even after hearing about the soul they don’t understand the soul at all. I saw a woman’s at the funeral parlor crying. “Oh my husband he’s gone, he’s gone.” I said , ” What do you mean he’s gone? There’s his body.” if I am sitting in a chair and I get up and move to another chair to sit, am I dead or gone forever? No, I just changed places. I am still conscious and the same person. Similarly when as loved one dies, they just move to another place. Many people confuse the body with the nature of the soul.

Here’s the thing about being a Christian, new or old: Trust Christ, No Matter What. Jesus said, “You cannot extend your life span by one cubit.” That goes for everybody, no exceptions, no matter the age of the person. Would you cut off your head and put it in a jar and cold storage right after dying, and hope for a “resuscitation by science”, as some sad baseball player did? You didn’t ask to come into this fallen world, in this present evil age, but here you are! You didn’t dicker with God about that, or choose your parents, did you? And so it is with death. We may not understand it. But His will is perfect. His timing is perfect. He’s always right!
